The original image of Laura Palmer on the TV

There’s a freeze frame image on a TV in the pilot episode of Twin Peaks, showing a home video of Laura Palmer. I thought it would make a good painting, stylized as white ‘scanlines’ of varying thickness.

I wrote a Processing sketch to let me experiment with settings to generate the image - I wanted enough scanlines to be able to discern the image, but not so many that it became impossible to paint.

I converted the image to a vector format and used an electronic cutter to cut out the scanlines as a vinyl stencil and then painted it to canvas and touched up all the details with a tiny paintbrush by hand.

The result is something that cameras struggle to capture accurately, and which genuinely makes your eyes go funny if you stare at it for too long, which I think is pretty great.
